>> What are long haul flights good for other than itty bitty tubes of toothpaste and different shades of flight socks? Catching up on the cack movies that you wouldn't pay £10 for (yes, it is THAT expensive to watch films in London...) nor would you think to download it online because that still requires an iota of effort.
Chéri is one of those fluffy films that I watched on the way over to Philadelphia, whilst trying to digest whatever kind of mystery meat pasta the airline had just fed me. Based on the novel by scandalous Parisian writer Colette, Stephen Frears has done his rompy period thing AGAIN laden with oh-so-witty (but not really...) one-liners with a stellar cast mostly used and abused by the odd scripting of this film and the less-than-subtle acting. Still, in my post-gluttony of airplane food and hazy sleepy demeanour, even though Chéri is most definitely not a Frears best and at times, unintentionally clunky and funny... the beautiful cinematography, sets and costumes were a visual feast that is worth watching IF it's on your flight path. Actually, watching it without the 'headsets' (why do airlines call them that when they're basically cheapie headphones...) was a far better experience and the pastel colours and sweeping curves of the Belle Epoque era depicted have thus been ingrained in my head ever since. It wasn't so much the style of dress (though costume designer Consolata Boyle did a fantastic job - the costumes were displayed at the Ciné Lumière in London for a while in May) that was appealing but the painterly mood and a dusky yet rich palette that is making me drawn to anything that features pale lilac, duck egg blue, pistachio green, light peach and emerald green with sumptuous and tactile fabrics being an added bonus...
