Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is People Get Ready by The Frames from their 2007 album The Cost on the ANTI- label.

The Frames – People Get Ready (MP3)Riding high on the success of 2005′s Burn the Maps, and the 2006 movie Once, starring vocalist/guitarist Glen Hansard, The Frames latest effort, The Cost, finds them at the height of their creative powers. Lighter fare than its predecessor, The Cost embraces the band’s folkier side, something that gained them an invitation from Bob Dylan to open the New Zealand and Australia leg of his tour. The softer side of The Frames may also bring them more attention stateside, a long overdue prospect for this 15-year-old band. If the recent movie and album aren’t enough for you, check out the duet Hansard created with Once co-star Marketa Irglova, The Swell Season.

After wrapping up in Australia, The Frames make their way to Seattle for Bumbershoot, performing Monday 9/3. For a preview, listen to the band’s performance earlier this year from the Triple Door, exclusively for KEXP, available from our Live Performances archive.

If the info provided here isn’t enough for you (I hope that it is not), check out the band’s website and MySpace page as well as this video of Glen Hansard performing Astral Weeks:
